Mario Chalmers could be an option for Cavaliers..

With Mo Williams potentially retiring, the Cleveland Cavaliers may have found their new backup point guard.

Ira Winderman of The Sun Sentinel reports that Mario Chalmers is a potential option for the Cavaliers:

"While Chalmers is eligible to be signed by the Heat, who dealt him to the Memphis Grizzlies last November in a tax-saving trade, such prospects would appear unlikely with the Heat loaded with possibilities at point guard with Goran Dragic, Beno Udrih, Briante Weber, Tyler Johnson and Josh Richardson. A reunion with LeBron James with the Cleveland Cavaliers remains a possibility, but that also could be a potential landing spot for former James Heat teammate Norris Cole, who also remains a free agent."

Chalmers last played in the NBA during the 2015-16 season with the Memphis Grizzlies, where he actually made his mark as the team's sixth man. However, an Achilles' injury ended his season early which led to the Memphis Grizzlies reaching a release settlement with the veteran point guard.

The Cavaliers currently have Kay Felder and Williams as the backups to Kyrie Irving, but assuming Williams does retire, the team suddenly has a dire a need for a veteran backup at point guard. Considering his familiarity with LeBron James and the fact he won two championships with James in the starting lineup with the Heat, Chalmers would seem to make the most sense of all of the free agent point guards.

The 30-year-old Chalmers averaged 10.8 points, 3.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game in 55 games and seven starts last season.
